New Delhi, Aug. 25 -- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Tuesday deployed a drone to spray insecticide over Naini Lake in Model Town, in a move aimed at strengthening its efforts to control
mosquito breeding ahead of the peak vector-borne disease season.
Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi, who launched the initiative, said drone technology would allow the civic body to cover large water bodies and other difficult-to-reach areas in a shorter time. The initiative, he said, would supplement conventional measures such as larvicidal spraying, fogging and field inspections.
The MCD has identified water bodies, drains, vacant plots and construction sites as among the vulnerable locations requiring regular surveillance. The drone-based spraying could also be extended to other large water bodies and inaccessible areas, officials said. Standing Committee chairperson Satya Sharma said the civic body was undertaking mosquito-control measures "on a war footing", with teams inspecting potential breeding sites and carrying out spraying and awareness drives.
