Kolkata, May 13 -- Abhishek Banerjee on Wednesday alleged that saffron-clad BJP supporters vandalised several food stalls and medicine shops near the sea beach in Digha following a felicitation programme for newly elected BJP MLAs held on Monday evening.
In a social media post, the Trinamool Congress national general secretary claimed the alleged attacks created panic among visitors, forcing many tourists to leave the popular seaside destination in haste. According to Banerjee, the situation has severely affected tourism in Digha, with large parts of the town reportedly witnessing a sharp drop in tourist presence.
He strongly criticised what he termed "anti-Bengal forces" and accused the BJP of spreading fear in one of the state's most visited tourist hubs. A video shared on social media purportedly showed chaos in the area, though the authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified.
The claims come amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal following the recent Assembly elections, with both major parties trading accusations over incidents of violence and intimidation in different districts. Earlier, on Tuesday, Banerjee alleged that two TMC workers, Somnath Bhattacharya from Polba-Dadpur in Saptagram Assembly Constituency and Tapan Sikdar from Chakdah, Nadia, lost their lives after being allegedly assaulted by BJP-backed miscreants.
According to Banerjee, both workers sustained severe injuries in the attacks and later succumbed, taking the death count in post-poll violence higher. He alleged that the
incidents reflect an atmosphere of fear, intimidation and political persecution under the
new administration.
