Kolkata, July 5 -- A deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal is set to bring widespread rainfall across West Bengal this week, with the heaviest impact expected in the state's coastal and western districts. The system, which intensified from a low-pressure area, is currently positioned near the Odisha-West Bengal coast and is moving north-northwest. It is likely to cross the Odisha coast within the next 24 hours.
Though Sunday witnessed spells of rain across Kolkata and several districts, the rainfall was not particularly heavy, the India Meteorological Department has warned that weather conditions are expected to worsen from Monday.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over East and West Midnapore and Jhargram on Monday. Heavy rain has also been forecast for Bankura, Purulia, South 24 Parganas, Howrah and isolated parts of Kolkata.
On Tuesday, Purulia, West Burdwan and Birbhum are expected to receive heavy rainfall, while the remaining districts are likely to experience cloudy skies with light to moderate showers. Rainfall activity is expected to gradually decrease from Tuesday before increasing slightly again on July 9.
Kolkata is likely to witness scattered heavy showers on Monday and Tuesday, with maximum temperatures hovering around 31-32degC. Temperatures may rise marginally from Wednesday. Meanwhile, the IMD has also forecast the formation of a cyclonic circulation, which is expected to influence South Bengal from the evening of July 6 or the morning of July 7. Under its impact, thunderstorms and enhanced rainfall are likely over South 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, Malda and South Dinajpur, particularly in areas bordering Bangladesh.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till July 7 as squally weather and rough sea conditions are expected along the West Bengal coast.
