India, June 24 -- With several key flyovers in Delhi crossing the 15-year mark and complaints surfacing about structural issues at some locations, the Delhi Government has sanctioned Rs.11 crore for a comprehensive structural audit of 44 flyovers across the capital. The move is aimed at assessing the health of ageing infrastructure that carries lakhs of commuters daily and identifying repairs before they turn into major safety risks. According to an administrative approval and expenditure sanction issued by the Public Works Department (PWD), consultants will be appointed to conduct structural audits of 44 flyovers in phases during 2026-27 and subsequent financial years, subject to the availability of funds. The expenditure will be booked under the head "Feasibility Studies of Various Corridors" under the PWD budget. Also Read - ED raids Delhi nightclub owner, others in 2021 Mundra port drugs seizure case The first phase in 2026-27 will cover flyovers including the Ring Road-IP Estate intersection flyover (1982), RUB Nagia Park-Shakti Nagar (1990), Naraina Flyover (2010), Mangolpuri Flyover (2008), Road over Disused Canal (2008), Lajpat Nagar-Srinivaspuri Flyover (2006) and Andrews Ganj Flyover near Kendriya Vidyalaya. Among these, complaints have been received regarding Naraina Flyover, Mangolpuri Flyover and Lajpat Nagar-Srinivaspuri Flyover, while issues related to expansion joints were reported on the Road over Disused Canal. Other structures scheduled for inspection include the Ring Road NH-24 Bypass Flyover, Sarai Kale Khan Flyover, Safdarjung (AIIMS) Flyover, DND Flyover, Maa Anand Mai Marg Flyover, ROB Road No. 56, Ghazipur Flyover, Apsara Border Flyover, Shyamlal College Flyover, Africa Avenue-Aruna Asaf Ali Marg Flyover, Grade Separator at Azadpur and several others constructed between 2003 and 2010. Under the approved scope, consultants will undertake structural assessments, topographical surveys, geotechnical investigations, preparation of Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), structural designs and drawings, bills of quantities, cost estimates, tender documents and technical support during execution, wherever required. As Delhi continues to grow, the safety and reliability of our infrastructure become even more critical. Many of our flyovers have been serving citizens for more than 15 years and carry lakhs of commuters every day." He added, "By initiating a comprehensive structural audit of 44 such flyovers, we are taking a proactive and scientific approach to assess their condition, identify any potential concerns at an early stage, and plan timely interventions wherever required." Calling the exercise an investment in public safety, the minister said, "This exercise is not merely an inspection; it is an investment in the safety, confidence, and convenience of Delhi's citizens." He added that the initiative reinforces the government's commitment to preventive maintenance, transparency and ensuring that public infrastructure remains safe and reliable for future generations.
