India, Aug. 11 -- Defying the challenges that typically accompany an expanding rail network, the Delhi Metro has achieved an exceptional 99.95 per cent train punctuality in 2026 so far, cementing its place among the world's most reliable metro systems. The achievement comes as the network continues to witness unprecedented passenger growth, with daily ridership rising from just 82,000 passengers in its first year of operations to a record single-day patronage of over 81 lakh passenger journeys on August 8, 2025. According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the system has outperformed several of the world's leading metro networks, including those in Hong Kong, Paris and New York, in punctuality and reliability. Unlike many global systems that classify delays only after several minutes, the Delhi Metro records a delay if a train reaches its destination station more than 59 seconds behind schedule. Also Read - Delhi Assembly passes bill to amend Fire Service Act to streamline fire safety regulations DMRC said train punctuality improved from 98.27 per cent in 2003 to 99.64 per cent in 2005, and has consistently remained above 99.9 per cent over the years. The corporation has also achieved a Mean Distance Between Failures (MDBF) of 2.72 million car-kilometres, placing it among the top five metro systems globally in reliability under the Community of Metros (COMET) benchmarking. The network has also significantly increased operational efficiency, reducing train headway from seven minutes in its early years to 2 minutes and 18 seconds on its busiest corridors. Delhi Metro has expanded from an 8.4-km corridor with six stations in 2002 to a 416.5-km network spanning 303 stations across 12 lines. Daily ridership averages 64.06 lakh passenger journeys, while nearly 29 per cent operates driverlessly.
