New Delhi, July 5 -- In a major push to upgrade government school infrastructure, the Delhi government has rolled out 'Mission Kayakalp', a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming schools across the capital into modern, safe and student-friendly campuses. Announcing the initiative on Sunday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the programme seeks to create inspiring learning spaces through extensive renovation, improved facilities and community participation.

The initiative focuses on addressing long-pending infrastructure gaps such as repairs, painting, waterproofing, modern science laboratories, clean drinking water facilities, rooftop drainage, greenery and improved amenities for students, including children with special needs. Improvement works are already underway or have been completed in schools across multiple districts of the capital. Announcing the initiative, the Chief Minister said, "Our goal is to make government schools not just centres of education, but modern and inspiring learning spaces for children."

She said Mission Kayakalp is being implemented with the support of district administrations, the Education Department, corporate organisations through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), social organisations, market associations and local communities. According to Gupta, public participation alongside government resources has helped accelerate infrastructure development in schools across Delhi.

Highlighting the scale of the programme, the Chief Minister said the campaign was far more than a painting drive. "Mission Kayakalp is not limited to painting alone but is a comprehensive campaign to transform government schools," she said.

Under the initiative, infrastructure works have been carried out in several districts. In North Delhi, a sensory park for children with special needs at a government school on Shankaracharya Marg has been renovated, while an RO plant and water coolers have been installed. A government school in Roop Nagar has received a modernised physics laboratory.

In South Delhi, extensive renovation has been completed at schools in Mehrauli and Qutub Mehrauli, including repairs to classrooms and roofs, renovation of toilets, replacement of sanitary fittings, repainting of buildings, installation of water coolers and campus beautification

through plantation drives.

Schools in Mohan Garden and Janakpuri in West Delhi are undergoing roof waterproofing, rainwater harvesting, electrical upgrades, installation of RO plants and renovation of sanitation facilities. Similar improvement works have also been completed at schools in Gokalpur, Shahdara and Sawda Ghevra, where infrastructure upgrades include repaired buildings, new water facilities, library improvements, space laboratories and

enhanced learning spaces.

Gupta said several schools that previously suffered from deteriorating infrastructure had already undergone a visible transformation. "The work being carried out under Mission Kayakalp has already transformed several government schools," she said, adding that the government would continue strengthening school infrastructure so that every government school in Delhi evolves into a model institution offering a safe,

modern and inspiring environment for learning.
