New Delhi, Oct. 3 -- With the onset of the Delhi government's PUC verification drive ahead of the winter season, the transport department plans to establish two major multi-lane pollution under control certification centres at its biggest interstate bus terminals, Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan, officials said on Saturday.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced last week a major pollution under control (PUC) certification enforcement drive as a step to control air pollution in the city.
"These will be dedicated multi-lane PUC centres for heavy and light motor vehicles, for testing and issuing certificates; a tender has been issued for the projects," an official said.
"While working on solutions to pollution, we identified a major gap. Commercial vehicles were getting fitness certificates from centres using old technology, while private vehicles were getting pollution certificates from booths outside petrol pumps," he added. Currently, Delhi has around 900 PUC centres that are located at petrol stations, and a few others in selected areas, the official said, adding that the two upcoming certification centres would be the first to be located at ISBTs.
