New Delhi, Oct. 26 -- Delhi BJP on Monday held a protest near the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his alleged disparaging remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The protesters were stopped by police when they tried to march from Sena Bhawan circle towards Kharge's residence on Rajaji Marg.
Around 2,000 BJP workers and leaders, including state president Harsh Malhotra, were detained as protesters attempted to break barricades and march forward, Delhi BJP said in a statement. Amid heavy police deployment in Sena Bhawan area, the detainees were packed into buses and shifted to Mandir Marg police station, from where they were later released, the statement added. The BJP had given a call for nationwide protests over Kharge's remarks during an event in Patna.
Addressing a function commemorating the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar's first chief minister Shrikrishna Singh, on Sunday, Kharge said the Congress will send those involved in carrying out alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process to jail.
During this, a member of the audience interrupted Kharge's speech and shouted, "Modi won't go anywhere."
"Modi ka baap bhi jayega, baap bhi jayega (even Modi's father would go)," Kharge retorted from the dais.
At the Sena Bhawan circle, protesters raised slogans against the alleged insult of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding an apology from Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
Harsh Malhotra said Congress leaders were defending Kharge despite his "disparaging" remarks against Modi.
"The Congress and its leaders are frustrated after suffering continuous electoral defeats. They cannot understand what to do and repeatedly resort to creating an atmosphere of anarchy and behave as though they are above the law," Malhotra said.
Delhi BJP in-charge Vinay Sahasrabuddhe said Congress leaders who, for generations, considered political power a hereditary property, should understand that the people have rejected their "dynasty politics".
The protest was attended by functionaries and workers of the BJP's youth, Purvanchal, and OBC morchas. Delhi BJP general secretary Mohan Lal Gihara, vice president Rajesh Bhatia, Purvanchal Morcha president Santosh Ojha, Yuva Morcha president Rajat Chaudhary, OBC Morcha president Santosh Pal, and many others took part in the protest.
