New Delhi, Sept. 10 -- Young athletes training at Delhi government sports centres and stadiums will now be eligible for a monthly incentive of Rs 2,000, with the Delhi Cabinet approving a new grassroots support component under the Mukhyamantri Khel Protsahan Yojana (MKPY) on Thursday.

The assistance will be available to athletes in the Under-14, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 categories who are regularly enrolled and training at government sports facilities. The scheme aims to help athletes meet expenses related to nutrition, local travel, basic sporting equipment and medical requirements.

Under the new component, up to 25 per cent of regularly enrolled trainees at each sports centre or stadium will be eligible for the assistance. Normally, the benefit will cover a maximum of 100 athletes at a facility, while larger centres may have up to 150 beneficiaries, subject to budget availability.

Selection will be based on sporting performance and potential, attendance, discipline and financial need. Athletes will have to maintain at least 80 per cent attendance to remain eligible.

The beneficiaries and their performance will be reviewed every quarter as part of the monitoring mechanism.
