India, July 15 -- The Delhi Development Authority (DDA), under the directions of Lieutenant Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu, has undertaken a specialised desilting drive of the major underground trunk outfall drain in Rohini to restore the carrying capacity of the drainage network ahead of the peak monsoon season. As part of the exercise, more than 10,000 MT of accumulated silt and waste has been removed from the underground drain. According to the DDA, years of continuous wastewater flow and heavy silt deposition had severely choked the pipelines, reducing their carrying capacity. Since conventional desilting methods were ineffective in the confined underground pipelines, the authority deployed high capacity Super Sucker and Jetting Machines. High-pressure water jetting was used to loosen compacted silt, which was then removed using powerful vacuum suction equipment. The drain carries storm water and discharge from Rohini Sectors 20, 21, 22 and 23, along with parts of Kirari and Begumpur. The project is aimed at ensuring smooth storm water flow and significantly reducing the risk of waterlogging in Rohini and adjoining areas. The DDA said desilting of storm water drains has been successfully completed in the East, South and North Zones, while work in the Narela, Rohini and Dwarka Zones is in the final stages of completion. To facilitate execution, Delhi was divided into six operational zones for focused planning, supervision and timely implementation.
