BALURGHAT, Oct. 5 -- Dakshin Dinajpur University is planning to introduce a School of Fine Arts, a first-of-its-kind initiative in North Bengal, once the necessary infrastructure is in place. The proposed school is expected to open new avenues for higher education in creative disciplines, with special emphasis on theatre, in Balurghat, a town known for its rich theatrical tradition.
The initiative aims to bring artistic expression, creative practices, aesthetics and innovative thinking into the higher education system alongside conventional academic disciplines. The proposed school may offer diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as opportunities for research in various creative fields.
Dakshin Dinajpur University Vice-Chancellor Pranab Ghosh said the initiative would be taken forward after the development of permanent infrastructure. He said the proposed school would allow students to pursue diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses and undertake research in different subjects.
"There is no School of Fine Arts anywhere in North Bengal. Once the permanent infrastructure is ready, we will open the School of Fine Arts, where students will be able to pursue studies and research in various disciplines.
The National Education Policy emphasises creative learning alongside subject-based education and we are focusing on that approach. Since Balurghat is known as a town of theatre, theatre will also be included in the School of Fine Arts, which will help promote the art form further," Ghosh said.
