Shimla, Sept. 23 -- Sarvesh Sharma, a student from Government Polytechnic College, Baru, in the Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, has emerged as a young innovator.
Son of a daily wage worker, Sarvesh Sharma has received funding of Rs 3.50 from the Ministry of Defense to develop 'Rudra Edge T-1 (Spectra)' -a hi-tech drone for the Indian Army.
IIT Roorkee will incubate the project, aiming for completion within 20 months.
Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta, who has invited Sarvesh Sharma to Raj Bhawan on Wednesday, felicitated Hamirpur boy for developing indigenous drone technology for the Indian Army while studying in the polytechnic college.
He was accompanied by his parents and Deputy Commissioner Hamirpur Gandharva Rathore.
Sarvesh Sharma earlier had participated in a national-level 'Open Cardboard Drone Competition', organised by IIT Jodhpur and the Konark Corps. Fifty teams from prestigious institutions across the country took part in the event, presenting their innovative ideas.
The event also included discussions about the challenges the Army faces with border surveillance.
Sarvesh's team secured the fourth prize, worth Rs 10 lakh, in the competition. Inspired by this experience,
Sarvesh began working on a prototype to address the Army's challenge and was able to successfully develop a drone at a cost of Rs 87,000.
Subsequently, Sarvesh applied for a startup project under the Ministry of Defence's initiatives-Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) and Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX)-and his proposal was approved on Monday.
