Kolkata, May 13 -- Newly elected CPI(M) MLA from Domkal, Mustafizur Rahman (Rana), on Wednesday said that despite being the lone Left representative in the West Bengal Assembly, he was confident of carrying forward struggles centred on livelihood, employment and workers' rights.
Speaking after taking the oath as an MLA, Rahman said the battle ahead would be difficult but asserted that he would not be alone. "The party and several mass organisations are with me. They are on the streets throughout the year fighting for people's issues," he said.
Rahman drew a distinction between what he described as the "political drama" between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP and the struggles of ordinary people. He said his focus would remain on the concerns of workers, migrant labourers and industrial employees.
Commenting on the Assembly election results, the CPI(M) legislator said the polls had witnessed sharp political polarisation.
According to him, while the BJP attempted to frame the contest through religious divisions, a larger section of voters was driven by anger against the Trinamool Congress government over corruption, unemployment and alleged irregularities in recruitment.
He alleged that people were frustrated over issues such as the SSC recruitment scam and other corruption allegations, leading many voters to support whichever party they believed could defeat the ruling dispensation.
