Cooch Behar, Oct. 4 -- Political tension surfaced in Cooch Behar district after CPI(M) party offices in Mathabhanga and Dinhata were allegedly vandalised, with the Left party accusing BJP-backed miscreants of involvement. The BJP denied the allegations.
The first incident was reported from Kawardara Bazar in Mathabhanga-I block on Saturday night. Police reached the spot after receiving the information. CPI(M) Cooch Behar district committee secretary Moksedul Islam alleged that the office was attacked after the party held a procession at Kawardara Bazar demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and measures to control inflation.
"Later, under the cover of darkness, miscreants sheltered by the BJP vandalised the office," Islam said. BJP district committee member Rajiv Sarkar said: "No one from the BJP is involved in this incident. They are making such allegations only to gain attention."
A CPI(M) office was also allegedly vandalised in at Bara Shaulmari in Dinhata. CPI(M) district committee member Shuvralok Das alleged that the office had been targeted earlier as well and claimed that the BJP was behind the incident. BJP Dinhata observer Utpal Das said: "The BJP does not believe in the politics of vandalism. We do not know who carried out the incident."
