Kolkata, Sept. 4 -- In two separate cybercrime cases, the Kolkata Police and the state police Cyber Crime Wing (CCW) busted two fake call centres allegedly targeting foreign nationals and arrested 14 persons on Thursday.
CCW officers raided a house on Debi Niwas Road in Dum Dum and arrested 11 persons, including seven women, for allegedly running an illegal call centre. The accused were caught making fraudulent calls. Police seized laptops, mobile phones, SIM cards and scripts used in the alleged fraud.
According to police, the gang posed as customer care executives of companies such as Amazon and Microsoft and targeted citizens of Australia, France, Portugal, Romania, Spain and the UK. They allegedly lured victims with fake offers of discounts, cashback rewards and delivery-related issues before obtaining banking details and inducing them to transfer money to fake accounts.
In a separate case, police raided a flat in Beniapukur and arrested three persons allegedly impersonating PayPal executives while making VoIP calls to US citizens.
They allegedly used remote-access applications to obtain banking credentials and siphon off victims' funds. Police seized five phones, four laptops, a tablet, six cheque books, Rs 10.10 lakh in cash and other documents.
