Cooch Behar, Sept. 16 -- The no-confidence motion against Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Sumita Barman was passed on Wednesday, paving the way for a fresh election to the post on September 30. The meeting was held under the instructions of the district administration in the presence of Additional District Magistrate Sajal Tamang.
A total of 22 Zilla Parishad members attended the meeting, including 20 Trinamool Congress members and two BJP members. All 22 supported the no-confidence motion against the Sabhadhipati and Sahakari Sabhadhipati.
The motion was passed through a show of hands. "The motion was passed in the presence of 22 members. I will submit the report," said ADM Sajal Tamang.
The Cooch Behar Zilla Parishad has 34 seats. In the 2023 Panchayat elections, the TMC won 32 seats and the BJP two. However, following changes in the political equations, a section of TMC members moved the no-confidence motion against the Sabhadhipati and Sahakari Sabhadhipati.
Himani Ishor, the TMC Zilla Parishad member who moved the motion, said: "Twenty of us and two BJP members were present today. The motion we had brought was passed. A vote was taken by show of hands."
