India, July 30 -- Tension gripped Cooch Behar town after the offices of three Left parties-SUCI, Forward Bloc and CPI(M)-were allegedly vandalised in separate incidents during the early hours of Wednesday. The Left parties blamed BJP-backed miscreants for the attacks, while the BJP dismissed the allegations as "completely baseless." According to SUCI leaders, unidentified miscreants attacked the party's district office on Khudiram Sarani around 3 am, allegedly breaking open the entrance, ransacking the premises and tearing down portraits of eminent personalities while chanting "Jai Shri Ram." Nepal Mitra, secretary of the SUCI Cooch Behar Town Local Committee, alleged: "The attack was carried out because of our ongoing movement against the BJP's anti-people policies."
A similar incident was reported at the Forward Bloc office in Khagrabari under the Cooch Behar North Assembly constituency. The party alleged that the office was vandalised between 3.30 am and 4 am, with furniture, including a television set, damaged. Cash and photographs of party leaders were also allegedly stolen. Forward Bloc leader Deepak Sarkar said: "We have lodged a written complaint with the police and are demanding immediate action." He claimed the attack followed the party's protest rally against Ananta Maharaj on Tuesday. Meanwhile, stones were allegedly hurled at the CPI(M) district office in Cooch Behar town, shattering several windowpanes. The party also released CCTV footage of the incident.
