Kolkata, Sept. 27 -- A Congress worker was brutally murdered by unidentified miscreants in the Islampur area of Murshidabad district, sparking intense political tension in the region ahead of upcoming assembly by-elections.
The victim, identified as Ziaur Rahman alias Pintu, was an active worker of the Congress party and a resident of Gopalpur in the Hurshi panchayat area. According to sources, the attack took place on Friday night along the isolated Debaipur-Shisapara road in Biharikhata.
Family members stated that Rahman had been receiving frequent threats due to his political activities.
On the night of the incident, he was cornered by a group of attackers who stabbed him with sharp weapons and assaulted with iron rods, leaving him in a pool of blood. Local residents rushed a critically injured Rahman to the
Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment on
Saturday night.
The murder has triggered a massive political controversy. Local Congress leadership and the victim's family have pointed fingers at workers associated with the Nationalist Congress Party of India (NCPI), alleging a deep-rooted political conspiracy to intimidate opposition workers before the voting begins.
The NCPI leadership has denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.
