Kolkata, Sept. 13 -- High drama unfolded in South Kolkata on Sunday afternoon as furious workers from the Congress and the BJP got involved in sloganeering and a face-off outside the Bhowanipore Police Station on Sunday afternoon.
The tension erupted while senior Congress leaders, including Ashutosh Chatterjee, were inside the police station facing interrogation. Officers interrogated them for nearly two hours. The questioning was linked to a Congress protest on September 8, where workers allegedly hurled shoes and burnt photos of controversial self-styled godman Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, popularly known as Baba Bageshwar.
Minutes after the Congress leaders entered the police station, a crowd of BJP workers arrived at the spot, shouting slogans condemning the insult to the Hindu preacher. The two rival groups came face-to-face right outside the police station. However, a heavy police contingent was deployed immediately to separate the two groups and the law and order situation did not deteriorate.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had ordered an FIR and subsequent action for insulting and burning the picture of the godman, which led to the arrest of Congress leader Atanu Das.
After questioning, the Congress leaders were safely escorted out of the police station.
