New Delhi, Oct. 1 -- Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday launched the 'Main Bhi Yamuna Prahari' mobile application at the Delhi University Sports Complex, seeking greater participation of students and citizens in efforts to clean and conserve the Yamuna.
Launched under the Seva Sankalp Campaign, the app will allow citizens, students, teachers and social organisations to register for the campaign. Gupta said the restoration of the Yamuna could not be left to government agencies alone and required sustained participation from residents, particularly the youth.
She announced that thousands of students from 30 Delhi University colleges will come together on October 18 to take a pledge for the cleanliness and conservation of the river. Gupta urged students to take the campaign beyond their campuses and involve their families and communities.
"Cleaning the Yamuna is not only the government's responsibility," Gupta said, adding that citizens' everyday practices also contribute to pollution. She cited the immersion of puja material, flowers, garlands, damaged idols and other items in the river as practices that add to the pollution burden. Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra said the cleanliness of the Yamuna required collective participation.
