New Delhi, Oct. 2 -- CM Rekha Gupta on Friday participated in a cleanliness drive at Azadpur on Gandhi Jayanti under the 'Seva Mera Yogdan' campaign and inspected civic conditions in the area, directing officials to take prompt action on issues related to garbage, encroachment, drainage and damaged infrastructure.
During the inspection, Gupta reviewed the condition of the central verge, footpaths, roadside walls, drainage system and nearby public spaces. She sought details from officials about garbage accumulation and footpaths being used by fruit vendors, as well as unauthorised advertisements on walls.
The chief minister directed officials to ensure regular cleaning of the central verge and surrounding areas and asked them to explore permanent solutions to civic issues. She also called for the improvement and beautification of the underpass and long walls through wall paintings.
Gupta interacted with fruit vendors operating on footpaths and said arrangements should take into account their livelihood while ensuring that footpaths remain accessible to pedestrians. She asked officials and local representatives to coordinate on a suitable arrangement for vendors and commuters.
The chief minister also urged fruit vendors and workers at Azadpur Mandi to ensure that waste generated during business is properly disposed of. She noted that waste left on footpaths could enter drains and affect the drainage system.
She further directed officials to maintain cleanliness and improve public facilities around the chowk being developed in the area. According to the government, a statue of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is planned to be installed there in December, after which it will be named 'Atal Chowk'.
Gupta said cleanliness should not remain limited to campaigns and should become part of daily life. She stressed that maintaining clean streets, markets, neighbourhoods and other public spaces was a shared responsibility. MLA Rajkumar Bhatia, Municipal Corporation officials, other public representatives and local residents were present during the inspection.
