Kolkata, Sept. 7 -- Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday apologised for a government advertisement that showed Goddess Durga with 11 arms instead of the traditional 10 arms.
He said that those responsible for the error had been cautioned and promised that his government would handle such matters with caution in the future. The picture of Durga with 11 hands went viral and was highly criticised by netizens. "First of all, as the chief minister of the state, I apologise. A defective advertisement was published in the newspapers. I apologise for that. Those who were responsible for issuing the defective advertisement have been warned. The government will be more careful in future," Adhikari stated while holding a Durga Puja coordination meeting at Milan Mela Prangan. The advertisement appeared in newspapers on Monday morning ahead of the coordination meeting.
TMC slammed the misrepresentation on social media, stating that the repeated mishandling of cultural traditions and the deity is deeply insulting to the people of Bengal. TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh questioned how the ten-armed goddess was transformed into an eleven-armed figure in an official release.
