India, June 29 -- The Delhi government on Sunday organised a state-level celebration to mark the birth anniversary of Sant Kabir Das, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announcing that competitions and awards will be instituted in the saint-poet's name to encourage young people to learn about his teachings and philosophy. The programme was attended by Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment B.L. Verma, Delhi Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh, MLA Neelam Pahalwan, scholars, representatives of social and religious organisations, government officials and members of the public. "His couplets and teachings continue to guide society even today. Sant Kabir Das Ji rose above caste, creed and social divisions to spread the message of love, brotherhood and unity," she said. Announcing the new initiative, the Chief Minister said, "The Delhi Government will institute competitions and awards in the name of Sant Kabir Das Ji to promote his teachings, couplets and message of humanity among the youth, thereby strengthening the values of social harmony, national unity and human dignity." Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh said Sant Kabir Das challenged caste discrimination and social evils while advocating equality, truth and brotherhood. "His teachings continue to inspire social harmony, social justice and universal human values," the minister said, adding that the government remains committed to preserving India's cultural heritage and promoting the ideals of great personalities among the younger generation. The event featured devotional music, cultural performances and a seminar on the life and philosophy of Sant Kabir Das. Participants also took a pledge to uphold the values of harmony, equality, brotherhood and humanity in society.
