CHANDIGARH, Oct. 23 -- Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday said canal irrigation had increased water utilisation from 22 per cent in 2022 to over 80 per cent, helping raise the groundwater table by four metres.

Addressing the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Mann said around 14,000 kilometres of pipelines had been laid to supply canal water to fields, with another 6,000 kilometres planned. He said farmers were reporting paddy yields of nearly 90 maunds per acre this season.

Calling canal water "desi ghee for Punjab's crops", Mann said the initiative aimed to conserve groundwater and secure farmers' future.
