India, July 20 -- The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) inducted 135 electric sanitation vehicles into its fleet, a move aimed at strengthening door-to-door waste collection and expanding the city's sanitation infrastructure. The vehicles were flagged off by Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi at Sector 10, Rohini. Of the total fleet, 46 vehicles have been deployed in the Rohini Zone, while the remaining will serve the Narela, Civil Lines and Keshav Puram zones. Local councillors, Rohini Zone Deputy Commissioner Anshul Sirohi and senior MCD officials were present at the event. Addressing the gathering, Wahi said the induction of electric sanitation vehicles would mark a significant step towards improving waste management while reducing dependence on conventional fuel. He said the vehicles have been introduced under the Delhi Government's newly launched Electric Vehicle Policy, aligning with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's vision of building a cleaner and greener capital.
The Mayor said the expansion of sanitation infrastructure reflects the civic body's efforts to modernise waste collection systems across Delhi. He added that sanitation resources are being strengthened in a planned manner across all MCD zones to improve operational efficiency and enhance cleanliness. Wahi also criticised the previous decade of governance, alleging that development works in Delhi had stalled during that period. He claimed that since the BJP government assumed office in Delhi, the MCD has been equipped with a range of modern sanitation machinery, enabling improvements in cleanliness operations across the city.
Highlighting the importance of waste segregation, the Mayor urged residents to comply with the Solid Waste Management Rules by separating waste into four categories at the source. Proper segregation and on-site disposal of wet waste, he said, would help reduce the volume of garbage reaching Delhi's landfill sites. Stressing that sanitation is a shared responsibility, Wahi called for active public participation in keeping the capital clean. He said the addition of electric vehicles would make the door-to-door waste collection system more efficient while contributing to Delhi's transition towards environmentally sustainable urban services.
