Raiganj/Siliguri, July 10 -- A civic volunteer was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Raiganj Fast Track Court for the 2021 murder of a private pathological laboratory assistant in North Dinajpur district.

The convict, Kusumuddin Ali, a resident of Basudevpur under Raiganj Police Station, was found guilty of killing Rabbani Ali with a sharp weapon. According to the prosecution, the blood-stained body of Rabbani Ali, a resident of Katabari, was recovered near Chapduar along the then National Highway 34 on May 23, 2021. Following the incident, the victim's wife, Surat Unnesha, lodged a complaint with Raiganj Police Station, leading to the registration of a murder case. During the investigation, police arrested Kusumuddin Ali. Public Prosecutor Swarup Biswas said: "After a prolonged trial spanning more than five years, during which the prosecution examined witnesses and presented evidence, Judge Surajit Mandal of the Raiganj Fast Track Court held the accused guilty and awarded him life imprisonment for the murder."

In another conviction, the fast track court of Siliguri has sentenced a man to life imprisonment, nearly ten years after he brutally murdered his wife in Kharibari. The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000, with an additional two months' imprisonment in case of non-payment.

According to the prosecution, in 2016, Hiralal Pahani, a resident of Rupramgachh under Kharibari Police Station, attacked his wife, Samori Pahani, multiple times with a sharp weapon following a dispute. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police arrested the accused soon after an FIR was lodged. Public Prosecutor Bibhas Kanti Poddar said: "The trial began in 2018. Based on the testimonies of around 12 witnesses and other evidence, the court found Hiralal Pahani guilty and on Thursday sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine and

default sentence."
