Kolkata, May 24 -- In a major development in the police administration, Kolkata Police has written to the Home Department requesting the return of personnel who had been transferred on deputation to posts under the West Bengal Police.

According to sources, during the TMC regime, several Kolkata Police personnel from the rank and file were transferred to district postings, allegedly as punitive measures. During the 2016 elections, many Kolkata Police personnel reportedly worked in accordance with the instructions of the Election

Commission. However, soon after the elections, several capable officers of the city police were transferred to districts for reasons that remain unclear. Some officers were allegedly posted in positions lower than their ranks. After the Bhangar division was brought under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police, the force reportedly began facing a major staff crunch.

In this backdrop, the authorities have written to the Home Department seeking permission for Kolkata Police personnel currently posted in districts to return to the city force.
