New Delhi, Oct. 23 -- A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel has been awarded a cash reward of Rs 10,000 and the Director General's Commendation Certificate for chasing and apprehending a passenger who fled a security checkpoint at Jama Masjid Metro station in Delhi.

Abhishek Verma, posted with the CISF's Delhi Metro Rail Corporation unit, was recognised for his alertness and prompt action in catching the passenger before he could leave the station.

According to officials, the incident occurred when a passenger's bag was put through an X-ray baggage scanner at the station's security checkpoint. A dense object appeared as a suspicious dark spot on the screen, prompting security personnel to ask the passenger to open the bag for a manual search.

However, the passenger allegedly grabbed the bag and fled the frisking area towards an escalator leading to the exit gate. Verma and other personnel chased him down the escalator and apprehended him near the exit gate before he could leave the station.

The passenger was taken to the station's control room, where he allegedly identified himself as a non-resident Indian from Kuala Lumpur who had arrived in India a day earlier.

During a manual search of the bag, security personnel found a semi-solid substance stitched inside an undergarment kept in it. As the substance could not be identified on the spot, the Delhi Metro Rail Police were alerted. The passenger and the recovered item were subsequently handed over to them for further investigation. CISF Director General Praveer Ranjan commended Verma for his alertness and sense of duty, saying the incident reflected the force's commitment to ensuring the safety of metro commuters.

Verma joined the CISF through direct recruitment on May 29, 2018, and has served with the force for more than eight years.
