New Delhi, Sept. 19 -- Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITMC) Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee's name figured in a CID forwarding letter submitted before the West Midnapore district court on Saturday in the alleged Salboni land-grabbing case, with the agency reportedly citing a statement by his personal assistant (PA) Sumit Roy that he deposited the alleged proceeds into a party account on Banerjee's instructions.
Roy was produced before the court along with three other accused - Amit Ghosh, Nityananda Roy and Lakshmikanta Bhuiya. The court rejected their bail pleas and remanded all four to CID custody for five days till September 24. Roy had earlier been remanded to eight days of CID custody in the case.
According to the CID's forwarding letter, Roy told investigators that one "T Ghosh" had given him cash to deposit into the account. Roy reportedly told the CID that he made the deposit on the instructions of Abhishek Banerjee. His statement was recorded under Section 180 of the BNSS. Assistant public prosecutor Syed Nazim Habib said the interrogation had yielded several pieces of information.
"During custody, several pieces of information were obtained. His statement was recorded and a further confessional statement was also recorded. His mobile phone was seized and he was interrogated alongside the other accused. We submitted all these details before the court," Habib said.
He said the other three accused had also provided important information during questioning. "Since all of them knew each other and were mediators, further police custody was sought and the court granted five days' custody to each of them," he said.
