New Delhi, Sept. 8 -- A 54-year-old Manipuri musician, Chongtham Vikram Singh, died after allegedly being assaulted by a group of eight people in southeast Delhi's Kilokari village following a dispute over noise outside his home.
The incident took place around 11:30pm on Sunday when Singh, who lived on the third floor of a building, went downstairs to dispose of garbage. He reportedly noticed workers linked to two nearby dhabas making noise and objected to the shouting and commotion. According to an account by a Manipuri social activist, an argument followed and Singh tried to return to his home. The group allegedly chased him into the building, followed him up to the third floor, overpowered him in the corridor and assaulted him before fleeing.
Singh sustained serious injuries and was taken to a private hospital for treatment. He later died while undergoing treatment. Singh had been working as a private music teacher in Delhi for around 17 years. He lived with his wife and their 20-year-old son. Police received a call about the assault at around 1:38am on Monday and registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Seven adults have been arrested and a 15-year-old boy has also been apprehended in connection with the case.
CCTV footage from the building reportedly shows eight men coming down the staircase after the alleged assault. The incident has prompted calls for a thorough investigation and swift action. A candlelight march was also held in Kilokari, with members of the Northeast community demanding justice for Singh.
