New Delhi, July 10 -- The Embassy of Mexico in India, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes - Nueva Delhi, is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition 'Mexican Film Posters: The Golden Age of Cinema through the work of Josep Renau 1940-1958', on July 16, 2026, at 6:30 pm at Instituto Cervantes New Delhi.

Film posters in Mexico emerged alongside the transformation of cinema into mass entertainment. Early single-ink street posters evolved rapidly with the release of Mexico's first sound film, 'Santa' (1931). From this moment, cinema became a powerful platform for cultural nationalism and music, creating icons that defined the nation's 'Golden Age'. Posters from this period often reflected the cultural nationalism and costumbrismo of Mexican cinema: mariachis, revolutionary figures, rural women and archetypal characters that shaped a collective national imagination.

This unique exhibition celebrates the visionary designs of Josep Renau, the legendary Spanish artist and political exile, while exploring how film posters transcended their original purpose as simple advertisements to become striking works of art that defined an entire cultural era throughout the mid-20th century.

Featuring historically significant posters preserved by Mexico's General Archives of the Nation (Archivo General de la Nación), the exhibition brings together remarkable film publicity materials created between 1940 and 1958, a period that corresponds to the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, including classics such as Ahi esta el detalle, Alla en el Rancho Grande and Ensayo de un crimen.

Through a compelling selection of 88 iconic film posters, visitors will discover how Renau combined photomontage, offset printing and bold graphic design to shape the identity of an unforgettable era in the history of Mexican cinema. This exhibition invites art enthusiasts, film lovers and the public to celebrate the timeless intersection of cinema, graphic design and cultural heritage through one of the most fascinating visual legacies of the 20th century.

'Mexican Film Posters: The Golden Age of Cinema through the work of Josep Renau 1940-1958' will remain on display daily, 11 am to 8 pm, until September 18, 2026, at the Instituto Cervantes - Nueva Delhi.
