New Delhi, Oct. 27 -- Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday announced plans to install one lakh smart streetlights and 50,000 new CCTV cameras across the Capital to strengthen women's safety, as she inaugurated the Centenary Academic Building, Computer Centre and Skill Development Centre at Daulat Ram College, University of Delhi.
Addressing students at her alma mater, Gupta said the smart streetlights would be connected to a Control and Command Centre to enable prompt identification of faulty lights and ensure their repair within a stipulated time frame. The initiative aims to reduce dark spots and make public spaces safer, she said. "Every girl in Delhi should move forward fearlessly, the Delhi Government stands with her to protect her safety and support her dreams," the Chief Minister said, urging students to pursue their ambitions with confidence and determination.
She stressed that women's safety should not be treated solely as the responsibility of women and called for a change in societal attitudes. Instead of imposing restrictions on girls, boys and men should be taught to respect women, she said. Gupta also highlighted the importance of technical education and practical skills in helping students become self-reliant. Education, she said, should go beyond earning a degree and equip young people to face life's challenges independently.
During her visit, the Chief Minister inspected the Faculty Reading Room, seminar room, Shri Ramalaya in the library, recycling unit and bakery unit to review the college's academic infrastructure and practical training facilities. She also discussed the proposed renovation of the auditorium and assured the college of her cooperation.
