Kolkata, Sept. 2 -- The West Bengal Fire and Emergency Services Department has served a show-cause notice to the TMC party office, located at 9 Camac Street, giving the establishment 48 hours to explain why it should not be sealed due to severe fire safety violations.
The strict administrative action follows a detailed, floor-by-floor joint inspection carried out by the Kolkata Police and Fire Department officials. The building's fire safety certificate has reportedly expired on August 10 and the management has since failed to renew it.
During inspection, officials flagged several critical lapses, revealing that the premises lack a designated emergency fire exit for safe evacuation.
Furthermore, the building's automated fire alarm system was found not to be working properly as it should in case of any fire incident. Apart from these, there was an inadequate supply of water allocated for firefighting on the upper floors.
The Fire Department has asked for a written explanation from both the building owner and the tenant within 48 hours. Failure to produce a satisfactory response or initiate immediate compliance measures might result in the building being sealed.
