Kolkata, Oct. 1 -- The Calcutta High Court will, on November 27, take up a Public Interest Litigation raising concerns over egg-pelting and other forms of public harassment allegedly targeting individuals and public figures.
The PIL is likely to be heard along with other petitions concerning similar incidents. Chief Justice Ravindra Vithalrao Ghuge had on September 23 directed the registry to identify cases involving the same issue and list them with the PIL.
The development came up before Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya on Thursday during the hearing of a plea by Mamata faction Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra seeking continuation of interim protection in an alleged hate-speech case.
Additional Advocate General Rajdeep Mazumder informed the court about the Chief Justice's order. Moitra's lawyer Arka Nag, meanwhile, submitted that she faced incidents of egg-pelting and mob harassment
during visits to her constituency despite a September 1 order directing the Krishnanagar SP to provide her with two police personnel whenever she entered the constituency.
PIL alleges that political workers and associates have faced public humiliation, physical attacks and incidents involving eggs, ink and stones. It also raises concerns over alleged unlawful restraint, assault and mob violence, seeking judicial intervention on the broader law-and-order concerns.
