Kolkata, Oct. 8 -- The Calcutta High Court has handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) the probe into the disappearance of two men who have remained missing since April 18, 2011 from Behala, observing that their whereabouts are yet to be made known either to their families or the court.
A division bench of Justices Debangsu Basak and Aryak Dutt was hearing two habeas corpus petitions that had remained pending since 2011. The petitioners were the fathers of the two missing men. Police had registered separate cases concerning the disappearances and, after completing their investigations, submitted final reports before the respective jurisdictional courts. The reports stated that no evidence had been found. However, the two men continued to remain untraced.
At the invitation of the petitioners' senior counsel, the High Court directed that the investigations be made over to the CBI, noting that the state had still not been able to disclose the whereabouts of the missing men to either the petitioners or the court.
The CBI has been directed to conduct the necessary investigations and submit an appropriate report before the jurisdictional court. It has also been given liberty to register fresh police complaints, if it considers necessary.
The High Court has listed both matters in its December 2026 monthly list, when the CBI is to submit a status report.
