Kolkata, May 15 -- The Calcutta High Court on Friday halted further demolition of a fire-ravaged building in Tiljala, while permitting removal of unsafe portions in consultation with residents.
Hearing a plea by occupants of the Golam Jilani Khan Road building, Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury directed maintenance of the status quo and barred any business activity or repair work at the premises.
The court noted that demolition must follow due legal procedure but also observed that residents had not disclosed whether the structure had statutory clearances.
The KMC claimed the building was unauthorised. The fire on May 12 killed two workers and injured three others.
