Kolkata, May 12 -- A division bench of the Calcutta High Court comprising Justices Rajasekhar Mantha and Rai Chattopadhyay on Tuesday recused itself from hearing proceedings linked to the alleged larger conspiracy angle in the R.G. Kar rape and murder case.
The bench observed that owing to its existing roster and the large number of matters pending before it, it would not be possible to devote the detailed hearing required in the sensitive matter. The case pertains to continuing proceedings arising out of the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
The bench had been hearing petitions seeking further investigation into claims of a wider conspiracy behind the crime. During earlier proceedings, it had allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation to re-interrogate convicted accused Sanjoy Roy and examine other individuals if required as part of the probe.
Following Tuesday's recusal, the matter is expected to be placed before another division bench by the Chief Justice on the administrative side. Earlier too, a division bench of Justices Debangshu Basak and Md. Shabbar Rashidi had stepped aside from hearing the matter following roster-related changes in criminal cases.
