Kolkata, Oct. 7 -- West Bengal saw a strong voter surge on Tuesday, with turnout touching around 80 per cent in the Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly bypolls despite allegations of electoral malpractice at several booths.

With nearly four in five voters casting their ballots, all eyes now turn to the October 9 count - and whether the heavy turnout delivers a clear verdict for any contestant. The high polling percentage has added significance as bypolls are being closely watched for indications of the political mood ahead of 2026 Assembly elections.

Both constituencies witnessed a keen contest, with the ruling BJP seeking to increase its support base for Nandigram.

The polling, however, was marred by allegations of intimidation, obstruction and irregularities, particularly in parts of Nandigram and Rejinagar. Congress demanded repolling at booths where it alleged serious violations, while MAITC accused the BJP of attempting to rig the polls.
