New Delhi, July 6 -- The CBI has arrested the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) project director in Shillong and two private persons for allegedly demanding a Rs 12 lakh bribe from a contractor to clear a pending bill of Rs 13.38 crore.

The agency registered the case on July 1 following a complaint against project director Aanand Singh Chouhan.

According to the CBI, the official sought an advance of Rs 4 lakh, which was to be routed through two intermediaries in Guwahati. The agency laid a trap, caught one accused accepting the bribe, and subsequently arrested Chouhan, Punit Agarwal and Manish Agarwal.
