
Kolkata, Sept. 27 -- Tension gripped Bolpur town on Sunday evening after a local BJP leader was shot dead two motorcycle borne miscreants.
The victim, identified as Chandan Balla, was the president of BJP Booth 202 in ward 11 of Bolpur. The incident took place in the evening at the busy Motipukur rice mill area under ward 12. It was learnt that Balla was intercepted by two unidentified, masked miscreants riding a motorcycle. Before the victim or bystanders could react, one of the assailants pulled out a firearm and shot the BJP leader in the head from point-blank range. The attackers immediately sped away from the crime scene, leaving the victim in a pool of blood. Local residents rushed Balla to the Bolpur Hospital where he was declared brought dead. As news of the assassination spread, a massive wave of outrage swept across the town. Local BJP leaders and supporters gathered outside the hospital, alleging a deep-rooted political conspiracy.
Family members of the deceased have claimed that Balla had been receiving threats due to his active political involvement in the area, pointing fingers at political rivals. Senior officials from the district police administration arrived at the spot with a large contingent of police personnel to prevent any further escalation of violence.
