
Kolkata, May 15 -- Several TMC leaders were arrested across the state including a councillor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on several allegations like extortion, threat, murder and a few others.
On Friday afternoon, Samaresh Chakraborty, councillor of ward 9 of the BMC was arrested on charges of extortion and assaulting a promoter in 2024. It was alleged that during the month of December 2024, Chakraborty allegedly assaulted the promoter who was constructing a building after obtaining necessary permission and documents from the BMC. But being the local councillor, Chakraborty allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh. Despite the promoter having paid him about Rs 23 lakh in two phases, Chakraborty and his men allegedly were putting pressure on him for the remaining amount and assaulted him. Though police had arrested a few of Chakraborty's associates, the councillor remained untraced. Later he surrendered before the Barasat court and subsequently was granted bail. Recently, again a complaint was lodged at the Baguiati police station against him for allegedly demanding extortion. On the basis of a case registered, police on Friday arrested him.
Meanwhile, in West Burdwan several TMC leaders including a panchayat deputy chief (upa pradhan) and two former councillors were arrested as well on charges of extortion. It is alleged that the two former councillors Manas Roy and Hira Bauri were accused of cheating and extortion while Budbud Panchayat deputy chief Rudraprasad Kundu was arrested for alleged extortion and threatening BJP workers.
In South 24-Parganas panchayat Pradhan of Deuli 1 panchayat Hafizul Molla and his associate Shahjahan Molla were arrested from Jibantala area in Canning for allegedly assaulting and attempted murder of a Bhangar resident Hafizul during the campaigning of the Assembly Elections, had allegedly said that after their win, oppositions will be run over under steam rollers.
This apart, at Nabagram in Murshidabad, a TMC leader identified as Md. Enayetullah was arrested on charge of murder. It is alleged that in 2023, he murdered a youth identified as Mehboob Sheikh. Enayetullah, the president of TMC
Nabagram block was also accused in a case under the Arms Act as well.
