Kolkata, Sept. 25 -- Tensions flared in the Narayanpur area of Rajarhat after local BJP workers were allegedly threatened and targeted by a local miscreant identified as Azad and his associates.
The BJP MLA of Rajarhat-New Town, Piyush Kanodia, alleged that not only were the BJP workers targeted, but the accused is also involved in many antisocial activities like drug dealing and keeping illegal arms.
According to sources, the unrest erupted after targeted threats were issued against active BJP workers in the locality on Wednesday. The situation escalated rapidly when a local BJP MLA arrived at the scene to issue a counter-warning to the accused individuals. BJP workers claim that the police found firearms, cartridges and drugs from Azad's office room. Kanodia alleged that Azad, a local miscreant, is close to the former TMC MLA Tapas Chatterjee.
Despite the regime having changed and the present government is trying to establish a crime- and addiction-free society, miscreants like Azad and his associates are selling drugs and trying to create unrest in the area. Kanodia further claimed that he has kept Rajarhat-New Town calm. But a section of TMC leaders are trying to create unrest in the area through miscreants.
Kanodia further claimed that despite being a miscreant, the police have not arrested Azad. "When I talked about the matter with the police, the cops said that they are trying to trace him. But Azad was seen in the area by several people," said the BJP MLA. Police however, refused to make any comment on the matter. A large contingent of police force was rushed to the area to control the situation and prevent further escalation of the situation.
