Kolkata, April 20 -- A civic volunteer identified as Govinda Ari was beaten up allegedly by some BJP activists in the Baranagar area.
The incident occurred near a housing complex that falls under Ward 15 of the Baranagar Municipality. It has already triggered tension in the region amid an intense electoral battle.
The victim was admitted to the hospital as he suffered injuries. Trinamool Congress local leaders alleged that the victim was standing on the road when some associates of a local BJP leader allegedly hurled abuse at TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, pointing to the victim. As he protested against the incident, he was allegedly assaulted by the BJP activists. The civic volunteer's hand developed a fracture. A specific complaint was lodged at the local police station in this regard.
Violence erupted in Baranagar last month as well after workers and supporters of the ruling TMC and the principal Opposition BJP clashed.
Sources said that the clash erupted over putting up posters, hoardings and flexes for election campaigning.
Initially, there were arguments, but it later turned into a scuffle, with both parties blaming each other for the violence. In Baranagar, the TMC has fielded Sayantika Bandyopadhyay, while the BJP nominee is Sajal Ghosh.
