Kolkata, Sept. 17 -- Five CPI(M) party offices in Bally-Belur were allegedly vandalised by BJP workers on Tuesday night, prompting the Left party to hold a protest march to Bally Police Station on Wednesday.
According to CPI(M) leaders, BJP workers arrived on motorcycles after a Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) meeting at Bally Khal bus stand and allegedly broke open the locks of offices at Panchanantala, Dewangazi, Pathakpara and Khamarpara. Two offices were reportedly targeted at Panchanantala.
Furniture and television sets were allegedly damaged, while doors and windows were vandalised. CPI(M) flags were also reportedly torn and thrown onto the road. The offices were subsequently locked, the party alleged.
CPI(M) workers reopened the offices on Wednesday morning after breaking the locks. Party leaders claimed they had informed police about the incidents on Tuesday night, but no action was taken.
The alleged attacks came days after eight CPI(M) offices were vandalised in West Midnapore, according to the party.
On Wednesday afternoon, CPI(M) leaders and supporters marched from the Dewangazi party office to Bally Police Station and staged a demonstration. A deputation was submitted demanding the identification and punishment of those responsible.
CPI(M) politburo member Srideep Bhattacharya alleged that Left offices were being targeted across Bengal and said the party would build a democratic resistance with public participation.
