Kolkata, July 5 -- BJP MLA Tarunjyoti Tiwari has accused former Rajarhat-New Town MLA Tapas Chatterjee of being involved in an extortion racket.
Tiwari alleged that building plans were illegally signed by Tapas Chatterjee even two to three years ago, on the basis of which construction work was carried out. He further alleged that in several cases, the plans were not approved by the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) but were instead cleared through the Trinamool Congress (TMC). According to Tiwari, construction was undertaken using duplicate or unauthorised building plans.
The BJP MLA also alleged that Chatterjee, along with Debraj Chakraborty, operated a syndicate and claimed that some engineers of the BMC were also involved. Chakraborty has already been arrested in connection with multiple cases.
Meanwhile, the Special Task Force (STF) of the state police interrogated Debraj Chakraborty to gather information regarding Sumit Dutta, the personal assistant to TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. On Sunday, the former TMC councillor of Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Ward 7 was questioned for nearly two hours.
Meanwhile, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has taken over the investigation into all eight cases registered against Chakraborty. According to several promoters who claimed to have been victims of Chakraborty and his alleged syndicate, any real estate developer who refused to comply with his demands was either threatened or served notices by the BMC citing alleged irregularities. They alleged that after negotiations with Chakraborty and his associates, the disputes would be resolved and the BMC would stop pursuing the matter.
It has also been alleged that Chakraborty and his associates illegally occupied land belonging to a school and constructed a badminton court on the property.
