Kolkata, Sept. 22 -- Industries Minister Tapas Roy, along with party leader Shisir Bajoria, met State Election Commissioner Krishna Gupta on Tuesday to discuss the timely holding of the municipal polls.
Bajoria said that they had come to plead with the SEC for free, fair and violence-free polls. "We suggested that the SEC should arrange proper security so there is no loss of life," he said.
The state government will hold a meeting soon with the SEC to finalise the dates of the polls, Bajoria said.
He said that in the first phase, the polls for the Howrah Municipal Corporation, along with the KMC, are expected to be held, and then gradually, polling for 126 civic bodies would be held.
The BJP leaders also discussed the checking of the EVMs so that there is no complaint at a
later stage.
The state government has plans to hold the polls by the end of November for most of the municipal corporations, an official said.
