New Delhi, Aug. 27 -- The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), under the Department of Consumer Affairs, has expanded the HUID-based silver hallmarking ecosystem ahead of the festive season, with 341 Silver Assaying & Hallmarking Centres across 102 districts and more than 25,000 registered silver jewellers.
Since the Silver HUID portal was launched on September 1, 2025, over 77 lakh silver jewellery pieces have been hallmarked with the six-digit alphanumeric HUID. Purity grades 925 and 800 account for nearly 95 per cent of hallmarked items. The Southern Region leads with 62 per cent, followed by Western at 18 per cent and Central at 10 per cent.
A BIS market survey covering 4,971 responses across 30 States and Union Territories found that 10-25 gram and 25-50 gram articles together account for nearly 74 per cent of demand. Anklets, chains, toe rings, finger rings and bracelets are among the most commonly sold items, with 925 and 800 ppt being the most popular grades.
BIS advised consumers to buy hallmarked silver from registered jewellers, verify HUID details through the BIS CARE app and retain invoices.
Complaints regarding discrepancies or misuse can also be lodged through the BIS CARE app or website.
