BALURGHAT, June 21 -- Balurghat's BJP MLA, Bidyut Kumar Roy, has raised serious concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of Dakshin Dinajpur University. Following a recent state Assembly session, the legislator met with West Bengal's Higher Education Minister, Jagannath Chatterjee, to officially present a memorandum highlighting the critical infrastructure and academic deficiencies plaguing the institution.

Speaking on the matter, Roy pointed out that the university continues to function without a permanent campus building or adequate infrastructure. Furthermore, the institution faces a severe shortage of permanent faculty and administrative staff.

The MLA emphasised that the absence of core humanities and social science subjects-such as Bengali, Geography, History, Political Science and Sanskrit-has left the local student community at a major disadvantage. Due to the lack of these fundamental courses, the university has been struggling to function effectively for a prolonged period.

"Our local students are suffering because the university does not offer the subjects they actually want to study. Without proper infrastructure, faculty, or essential courses, the university is practically on life support," Roy stated.

According to the MLA, the Higher Education Minister received the demands with empathy and assured a swift, priority-based resolution to these grievances. Additionally, the Minister reportedly directed department officials to put a strict check on any administrative discrepancies or mismanagement that had taken root during the TMC's tenure, aiming to restore academic integrity to the institution.

Meanwhile, fresh efforts have begun to establish the permanent infrastructure of the university at the earmarked 11-acre site in Mahinagar, near Balurghat airport.

The university's Vice Chancellor, Pranab Ghosh, has already written to the state Higher Education Department and Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar, seeking immediate steps for the construction of the permanent campus. Notably, the academic activities at the university began in 2021, but even after five years, the institution still lacks permanent infrastructure.
