New Delhi, Sept. 12 -- University teachers' organisations in West Bengal will approach Governor and Chancellor R N Ravi next week against two higher education amendment Bills passed by the state Assembly on September 10, seeking his intervention to prevent them from becoming law.
The organisations said they would consider legal action and street protests if their demands were not addressed.
Representatives of university and college teachers' organisations, including the West Bengal College and University Teachers' Association (WBCUTA), announced the decision on Saturday. They have opposed provisions
providing for the administrative transfer of university teachers and non-teaching staff and changes to provident fund benefits.
The two Bills are the West Bengal Universities and Colleges (Administration and Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which provides for inter-university transfers of teaching and non-teaching staff of state universities, and the West Bengal University Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
Jadavpur University Teachers' Association president Parthapratim Ray said the proposed transfer provision did not lay down clear rules or safeguards and would allow the
Chancellor to transfer teachers in consultation with the state government. "It is directly an intervention in university autonomy," he said.
