Kolkata, July 26 -- The Cyber Crime Wing (CCW) of the West Bengal Police has arrested a key operative of an interstate digital arrest fraud syndicate from Goa in connection with a case registered at the Electronics Complex Police Station under the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. The accused, Aman Singh, will be brought to West Bengal for further interrogation and investigation.
According to sources, last month an official of Tata Teleservices, whose office is located in Salt Lake Sector V, lodged a complaint alleging that the company's fraud management system had detected a phone number being used to defraud multiple people. Based on the complaint, the Electronics Complex Police Station registered an FIR and initiated an investigation. A few days later, the probe was taken over by the Cyber Crime Wing.
During the investigation, CCW officers found that an organised criminal network was operating digital arrest frauds through unauthorised telecom infrastructure and illegal call centres. The preliminary investigation led to the arrest of several key managerial personnel linked to the fraud operation. Their interrogation and subsequent investigation revealed the involvement of Aman Singh, identified as one of the principal operatives of the syndicate.
Police said Singh is also a key accused in similar digital arrest fraud cases being investigated by the Mumbai Police, and his bail application in one such case was rejected by the Bombay High Court. He is also an accused in a serious sexual offence case registered in Kolkata and had been evading law enforcement agencies. Besides, he is wanted in multiple digital arrest fraud cases registered in several states.
Using technical surveillance, intelligence gathering and coordinated operational efforts, the CCW traced Singh to Goa. A police team was subsequently sent there and arrested him on Sunday.
